Keeping a Strong Immune System During a Pandemic

With the coronavirus pandemic in full swing throughout the world, now more than ever is the best time to get your immune system strong and ready to fight back against the virus should you get infected.

However, this can be challenging given the lockdown measures in place throughout the world. Many states and countries have enforced strict self-isolation measures that can make it hard to maintain healthy habits, which in turn can lead to a weaker immune system. We’re going to explore how to keep your immune system strong even when practicing self-isolation:

1. Diet

A healthy diet is critical to a strong immune system. Specifically, make sure you get plenty of vitamin A, B6, C, D, and E along with minerals such as zinc, iron, and selenium. These are present in many food items, but it’s also a good habit to store some supplements to ensure you’re getting adequate amounts. Being inside all day, for example, can lead to your body producing less vitamin D since you are not exposed to as much sunlight.

Protein, probiotic foods, and foods rich in antioxidants are good for the immune system as well. Try to keep half your plate in each meal filled with fresh and brightly colored vegetables. Look for probiotic yogurt to snack on between meals as well.

2. Sleep

Sleep is also important to a healthy immune system. Ensure you’re getting at least eight hours of sleep a day and on a consistent schedule. In addition to sleep, avoid vices such as smoking or alcohol that can impact the quality of your sleep. Try to achieve natural sleep as much as possible without medication.

3. Exercise

Finally, exercise is critical to a strong immune system and can be the hardest to achieve when stuck at home and self-isolating. Luckily, there are plenty of effective home workouts you can perform. Look into spending 30 minutes at least three times a week doing some form of a body workout that involves pushups, situps, and squats. Complement it with a stroll on your balcony if you have one, or just outside your home while maintaining your distance from others.

By focusing on a good diet, adequate sleep, and effective exercise, you’ll be able to keep your immune system in optimum shape should you be infected with COVID-19. Moreover, these practices will also boost your mental health and general well being during these tough times.
