Snoring and sleep apnea
Understanding the cause
Snoring occurs when airflow becomes partially blocked during sleep, causing soft tissues to vibrate and produce noise. These vibrations, and the pauses that sometimes occur between snores, may signal obstructive sleep apnea. During apnea episodes, breathing stops briefly, placing strain on the heart and increasing health risks.
i.
Airway obstruction from the tongue or soft tissues
ii.
Interrupted breathing episodes overnight
iii.
Daytime fatigue and lack of concentration
iv.
Potential cardiovascular complications
If you or a loved one notices loud snoring, disrupted sleep or daytime drowsiness, a sleep study (polysomnogram) can help diagnose underlying sleep apnea.
Oral appliance therapy
A more comfortable alternative for patients who struggle with CPAP
Oral appliances are a convenient, noninvasive way to manage mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. These devices hold the jaw in a slightly forward position, helping keep the airway open throughout the night.

FDA-accepted oral appliances
Prescription appliances, fitted by a dental professional
The FDA has approved more than 65 sleep apnea appliances as safe and effective medical devices. Because these appliances require a prescription, they must be fitted and provided by a qualified dental professional. Online or over-the-counter devices are not regulated, often fit poorly, and may be unsafe.

Snore stopper therapy
How an oral appliance helps you breathe
For many patients with airway narrowing or a tongue that shifts backward during sleep, oral appliance therapy repositions the jaw and stabilizes the tongue. This enlarges the airway and reduces obstruction, supporting easier breathing throughout the night.
i.
Improved airflow. Helps prevent tongue collapse and airway blockage.
ii.
Enhanced daytime alertness. Better sleep can improve energy, focus and mood.
iii.
Behavioral support. Weight management, reduced alcohol use and sleep-position changes may also help.
Comparing your options
Oral appliance vs. CPAP
| Compare | Oral applianceCustom-fitted, at our office | CPAPMask, hose and machine |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Holds the jaw slightly forward to keep the airway open | Pushes pressurized air through a mask to keep the airway open |
| Wearing it | Fits over your teeth, similar to a mouthguard | Mask and headgear connected to a hose |
| Noise and power | Quiet, with no machine or power needed | Machine needs power and makes some noise |
| Travel | Small, portable case | Machine, hose and mask to pack |
| Best suited to | Mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea | A wide range of cases, including severe sleep apnea |
CPAP remains an important treatment, particularly for severe sleep apnea. The dentist will discuss whether an oral appliance suits your diagnosis and whether a sleep study is needed first.
