Professional treatment at the dentist can only take up to one hour and involves the application of gel. From there, your teeth will be exposed to a heating lamp or laser for up to 20 minutes.

Usually, it will be done three times. While the treatment on its own isn’t a hassle, what truly matters is the post-care for lasting impact. It is recommended that you don’t drink or eat anything that will leave a deep stain on your teeth within 24 hours.

You should avoid coffee, tea, fruit juices, and wine. Aerated drinks are also bad. For food, you should avoid chocolates, sauces, red meat, and avoid leafy vegetables that have been blanched. Any coloring agents or powers should also be avoided.

You should also try to avoid any food that is very cold or vet hot as your gums are very sensitive after the chemicals have been used. Cold or hot food will increase and aggravate sensitivity. Smoking should be avoided for as long as possible or at least 24 hours.

The tar in cigarettes can leave a stain on your teeth and these stains are worse on teeth that have just been whitened. Colored toothpaste is also a bad idea after a whitening treatment. For maintenance that lasts long-term, you should brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss frequently, and use mouthwash.

If possible, you should also try to avoid any food or drinks that may stain.
