A woman covers her ears with a pillow while her partner snores

Snoring and sleep apnea

Understanding the cause

Snoring occurs when airflow becomes partially blocked during sleep, causing soft tissues to vibrate and produce noise. These vibrations, and the pauses that sometimes occur between snores, may signal obstructive sleep apnea. During apnea episodes, breathing stops briefly, placing strain on the heart and increasing health risks.

i.

Airway obstruction from the tongue or soft tissues

ii.

Interrupted breathing episodes overnight

iii.

Daytime fatigue and lack of concentration

iv.

Potential cardiovascular complications

If you or a loved one notices loud snoring, disrupted sleep or daytime drowsiness, a sleep study (polysomnogram) can help diagnose underlying sleep apnea.

Oral appliance therapy

A more comfortable alternative for patients who struggle with CPAP

Oral appliances are a convenient, noninvasive way to manage mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. These devices hold the jaw in a slightly forward position, helping keep the airway open throughout the night.

FDA-accepted oral appliances

Prescription appliances, fitted by a dental professional

The FDA has approved more than 65 sleep apnea appliances as safe and effective medical devices. Because these appliances require a prescription, they must be fitted and provided by a qualified dental professional. Online or over-the-counter devices are not regulated, often fit poorly, and may be unsafe.

Snore stopper therapy

How an oral appliance helps you breathe

For many patients with airway narrowing or a tongue that shifts backward during sleep, oral appliance therapy repositions the jaw and stabilizes the tongue. This enlarges the airway and reduces obstruction, supporting easier breathing throughout the night.

i.

Improved airflow. Helps prevent tongue collapse and airway blockage.

ii.

Enhanced daytime alertness. Better sleep can improve energy, focus and mood.

iii.

Behavioral support. Weight management, reduced alcohol use and sleep-position changes may also help.

I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Martirosyan. She carefully addressed each of my sons’ unique dental and orthodontic needs, explaining both the cosmetic side and their overall dental health in detail. I truly appreciated her thoroughness. The staff and the office environment were professional and welcoming. I feel very confident and excited to begin treatment for both of my boys.

It’s taken me a lifetime to find a comprehensive dental practice where I can fully trust every hygienist and Iam not afraid of a cavity or a crown. Thank you Dr. Marine and Dr. Yusuf for all the work you’ve completed on my teeth. Thank you to the entire office staff who make me feel like family when I’m there and who always have a plan of care for me. If you need extractions, fillings, crowns, braces, Invisalign, whitening or veneers you’ve found the right place. They’ve restored my smile and I’m forever grateful.

Best Doctors, amazing Staff and they have the best technology; equipment and tools for patient care. Dr Marine made my smile better with Orthodontic treatment. I didn't realize my bite was off until I saw the before and after pictures. She is definitely as knowledgeable and experienced as can be, as well as determined to perform to perfection. You can tell by her professionalism and knowledge. She doesn't cut corners and gives you the best treatment based on your needs for long term care and benefits. Dr Youssef did my fillings recently and he was gentle and informative with my treatment. He used special equipment to help with keeping my mouth open and relaxed during the whole treatment, which also had a protective rubber piece to keep my tongue out of harms way. Never knew this stuff existed, plus no drooling with the consistent suction it provides the whole time. It made the whole experience comfortable, without feeling like I'm going to drool all over myself. My deep cleaning with Marianna a few weeks ago was painless because of how patient and gentle she is with her control of the cleaning/scrapping tools. I've hesitated going in for a cleaning for the last few years because of the pain and discomfort that is usually involved. As a result I needed a more ínstense cleaning, but with her skill and numbing used I barely felt anything. The most comfortable cleaning ever! I will definitely be coming back more regularly without hesitation. Also, going to mention they have very welcoming staff and a modern looking office.

Dr Marine did my Ortho using Fast Braces and my beautiful Veneers. The photo is unedited and with no filters. I have been treatment planning for Dr Marine and truly cares about our patients and always offer the best long term care. That’s why I would only trust her with my teeth.

Questions

Sleep apnea and snoring FAQs

Common signs include snoring, morning headaches, daytime fatigue and pauses in breathing during sleep. A sleep study provides a definitive diagnosis.

For many patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, FDA-accepted oral appliances are an effective treatment and a common alternative for people who cannot tolerate CPAP. The dentist will tell you whether one suits your diagnosis.

We don’t recommend it. Non-prescription devices are not regulated, may fit poorly and can be unsafe. FDA-accepted sleep apnea appliances require a prescription and are custom-made and fitted by a dental professional.

Not always, but frequent snoring, especially with pauses or gasping, may indicate obstructive sleep apnea and should be evaluated.

Yes. Custom appliances are designed to fit your teeth and jaw comfortably. Most patients adjust to them quickly.

Losing weight, limiting nighttime alcohol, avoiding back sleeping and reducing sedative use may improve snoring and sleep quality.
