Laser Periodontal Therapy
Using Laser Dentistry to Fight Periodontal Disease.
What is Laser Dentistry?
Laser dentistry is the use of lasers to perform dental procedures and treatments.
A laser is a unique device that uses light energy to perform work; they can treat
targeted dental tissue while leaving surrounding tissue unaffected. It’s this feature,
among others, that allows our Glendale dentist to perform very precise procedures
with little or no anesthesia because of its gentle and precise nature. In addition,
lasers are also perfect for sealing off blood vessels and nerve endings during a
procedure, which causes less bleeding, postoperative pain and swelling.
Laser use in Periodontal (Gum) Disease
Periodontal or gum disease is an infection of the bone and supporting structures
of your teeth. Periodontal bacteria may cause an inflammatory reaction which leads
to a damage of the fibers that connect your teeth to your bones, and can create
what we call a periodontal pocket. You can keep these pockets clean with routine
brushing, flossing and rinsing, but if it’s very hard for you to clean them because
of the pocket’s depth, you may result having bacteria living at the bottom of these
pockets, leading to chronic gum infection.
Our Glendale dentist states; "As we age we become more susceptible to periodontal
bacteria and take less care of our oral hygiene which is a reason for periodontal
disease to develop. Without the proper treatment your teeth will loose enough support
and will eventually be lost".
Gum disease and tooth loss are related to deterioration of bone mass. This indicates
that this disease affects your body’s response and may result in other type of complications.
Pregnant women with periodontal infection are at risk of delivering premature and
low birth weight babies. Read article in

How do we use Laser Dentistry to fight Periodontal Disease?
At our Glendale dental office we use lasers to attack periodontal inflammation at
the microscopic level of infection. It generates a tiny beam of concentrated light
energy that destroys otherwise inaccessible bacterial groups while creating an ideal
environment for healing. We will go around each involved tooth to remove any remains
and calcified deposits that are adhering to your teeth in a process called scaling
and root planning. This process will remove the mechanical irritants to your gums
and supporting bone and also removes a major reserve of periodontal bacteria.
After removing the tartar and calculus, a laser is used to selectively remove diseased
or infected tissues lining the pockets around your teeth. At the same time the laser
will kill the bacteria that cause gum disease and promote its healing. Some lasers
can help increase circulation and collagen formation at the bottom of your periodontal
pockets.
Laser Periodontal Therapy
A high percent of Americans suffer from some kind of gum disease, but dental fear
is one of the factors that stop patients from having dental treatment. At Pacific
Dental Care we want to let out patients know we have the necessary technology for
Laser Periodontal Treatment, which is a non-surgical approach for treating gum disease.
We have found that this is a very effective treatment, and much more comfortable
than traditional periodontal surgery.
Laser periodontal therapy is a breakthrough in the treatment of gum disease; we
use this procedure to preserve as much of the healthy gum tissue as possible, maintaining
the height of the gums around the teeth, and minimizing the dental discomfort to
the patient.
Is this procedure Safe?
One of the biggest advantages of laser therapy is the fact it can be performed with
much less discomfort and postoperative pain than with conventional methods. Our
Glendale dentist or hygienist will have you wear special safety eyewear during the
procedure. These specially designed glasses also protect your eyes from other materials
that may be used during your therapy.
Benefits of Laser Periodontal Therapy:
- Faster dental healing
- Minimal post-op discomfort
- Less bleeding
- Decreased sensitivity
- Faster procedure that traditional periodontal surgery
- Reduced risk of infection
